What
is "Xeriscape"?
Xeriscape
xeros - derived from Greek meaning dry
This landscaping
term was handpicked for extreme Colorado weather. In fact is was
first used by a special task force of the Denver Water Department,
Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado and Colorado State
University to describe water conservation in landscaping. A term
to be taken seriously where water becomes a more and more serious
issue every season, especially when the average home uses fifty
percent of their water for landscaping. Xeriscaping works to prevent
such problems. Here are just some important things to focus on,
but there is so much more information, this is only to get you started.
1. Plan ahead. Look where your plants are and where you want them
to go.
2. Consider the slope or grade.
3. Avoid too much turf.
4. Soil preparation.
5. Mulch.
6. Proper irrigation.

What
was the name of the orange flower and the name of the marigold that
is hardy @ 10,000 feet, that Jane Hendrix mentioned in her program
in April?
I think it was a "Mexican Marigold." A couple different
marigolds have this common name: Tagetes lucida, and Tagetes
lemmonii. This marigold is an annual; it will not winter over.
It does seem to be more frost tolerant than the standard marigold.
