Have you seen an elk eating poppies on a roof along Highway 9 in Silverthorne? That’s a showpiece at the Alpine Earth Center. The passive solar building is “home to Alpine Gardens, Alpine Solar Design, Summit Yoga, Namaste Massage, and Do It Yourself Health”. It is an interesting place. Check out the organic vegetables they grow.

Doug Tilley
Doug’s operation is located in Fairplay. He offers trees, especially aspens and conifers, at cheaper prices than those in Summit County nurseries. It is best to call Doug and make an appointment prior to heading over Hoosier Pass. You can bring trees back in a truck or on a trailer, but take a tarp with you to cover them so that they do not get damaged on the journey to their new home. Doug can deliver them, too, for a fee! Also, Doug sells firewood.

He has a lot where he stores trees on the east side of Hwy 285. In Fairplay, turn left at the lights at the juncture of Highway 9 with 285. Shortly afterwards, take county road 16 to the right and you will see Doug’s trees off to the left. Drive towards them on dirt tracks!
Johnie's Garden
Located on the road to Minturn, this nursery is well worth a look at if you are visiting Vail or Avon. They have a wonderful array of plants, some of which are not available in Summit County. If you are looking for herbs, this garden center may have what you are seeking. This is a full service nursery and may be a source for trees and bushes, too. At Christmas they sell wreaths and trees. They’re also a vendor of pottery from around the world.
